Join us and step inside the World of Alvar Aalto for an exclusive guided visit to The Aalto House (Villa Aalto), the intimate home and studio of legendary Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and his wife, Aino. Nestled in a quiet corner of Helsinki, this iconic building offers a rare glimpse into the life, work, and creative spirit of one of modern architecture’s most celebrated figures.

Built in 1936, The Aalto House is more than just a residence. It is where Aalto designed some of his most groundbreaking works. The building’s unique design seamlessly combines the family's living spaces with the architect’s studio, featuring a wide terrace opening toward the park and sea. Its style, often described as romantic functionalism, reflects Aalto’s masterful use of natural wood, thoughtful window placements, and his signature warm, human-centred approach to modernism.
During your visit, you’ll experience Aalto’s Personal Touch from the handcrafted wooden surfaces to the four brick fireplaces, every detail reflects Aalto’s philosophy of functional beauty. You will also see how the house bridges the transition from strict functionalism to Aalto’s softer, more organic design language later showcased e.g. in Villa Mairea.
The house is a place of personal and architectural history and you will learn about the life of Alvar and Aino Aalto, the family’s story, and the evolution of Finnish design. The house has been carefully preserved and is now part of the Aalto Museum, awaiting possible UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2026.
Don’t miss the museum shop with its curated selection of books on architecture and design, perfect souvenirs for any architecture lover.
The visits are by guided tour only. Book ahead to secure your spot Arrive on a sunny day if you can, as you will have to wait outside before your tour begins.
The house retains its original 1930s layout and unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible.
There is no museum café, so take the tram back to the city centre after your visit and continue your Aalto experience with a coffee at the Aalto-designed Academic Bookstore café.
