Join us to to discover Helsinki underground: Amos Rex, a bold fusion of private legacy and cutting-edge creativity. Opened in 2018 in the iconic Lasipalatsi (“Glass Palace”) building, Amos Rex has quickly become one of the city’s must-see destinations for art lovers, culture seekers, and curious minds.

The story begins with Amos Anderson, a Finnish media magnate and passionate art collector. His private collection ranging from early 20th-century Finnish masterpieces to rare glassworks and textiles formed the foundation of the original Amos Anderson Art Museum in his original flat, which opened in 1965. Today, that spirit lives on in a stunningly reimagined space beneath the historic Lasipalatsi.
Amos Rex houses over 6,000 works of art, from paintings and sculptures to photography, graphic art, furniture, and design. But this is more than a museum of the past. With a focus on modern and contemporary Finnish art, Amos Rex keeps welcoming bold new voices and experimental exhibitions. Every three years, the Generation exhibition puts the spotlight on rising young artists aged 15–23 making Amos Rex a launchpad for the next wave of creative talent.
You will also discover the private collection of a renowned architect and art theorist, Sigurd Frosterus, whose post-impressionist collection adds a new dimension to the museum. Frosterus is also known for designing Helsinki landmarks like the Stockmann department store and the former residence of the Finnish president.
Housed in a landmark of 1930s Finnish functionalism, the Lasipalatsi building has now a new life as an architectural marvel. The museum’s subterranean galleries rise through the square above as playful dome-like skylights, creating a distinctive urban landscape and one of Helsinki’s most photographed spots.
Amos Rex is fully accessible, with elevators, cloakroom facilities, and accessible loos for all visitors. Don’t miss the museum shop, which offers a good selection of books, art theory publications, and artist merchandise. After exploring, enjoy a coffee or glass of wine at Lasipalatsi Café or dive into the vibrant food scene just steps away.
