Join us to discover the world behind the cult film and step Into the Third Man Museum, post-war intrigue, cinematic legend, and Viennese history at The Third Man Museum, a one-of-a-kind cultural treasure dedicated to the 1949 film noir masterpiece The Third Man by Graham Greene and Carol Reed.

Voted the Best British Film of the 20th Century by the British Film Institute, this timeless classic is more than just a film. It is a lens into a world of espionage, mystery, and resilience set against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of post-war Vienna.

Opened in 2005, the museum spans 16 rooms filled with over 3,000 original exhibits, giving fans and curious minds a rare look behind the scenes of the film and the era it captured. From Trevor Howard’s annotated screenplay and the cap worn by little Hansel, to over 100 editions of Graham Greene’s novel, vintage film cameras, production equipment, and the iconic Elchinger gravestone from the cemetery scenes. The collection is as captivating as the story it honours!

However, the museum isn’t just for movie buffs. Vienna between 1945 and 1955 was a city in the shadows. The museum opens a window into everyday life in Allied-occupied Vienna. Through personal letters, rare documents, and evocative objects from the period, you will experience the tension, hope, and complexity of a city split between powers, a place where reality often mirrored fiction.

Founded with passion by Gerhard Strassgschwandtner and Karin Höfler, this independent, award-winning museum earned the Vienna Tourism Prize in 2020 and continues to receive international acclaim for its unique storytelling and dedication to authenticity.

The museum is open on Saturday afternoons, or you can book a private VIP tour any day of the week for an exclusive experience.

While there's no café inside, you're only steps from Naschmarkt, Vienna’s food hotspot that the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere of the city’s shadowy past. There is a museum shop where you can find the book and film versions in different languages.

Due to the historic nature of the building, full wheelchair access is limited. Rooms 1 and 2 are accessible via a street-level entrance (please ring in advance), but Room 3 and the entrance with the fairly interesting museum shop only navigating stairs.
