Step into the past at Schattenburg Castle where nearly 1,000 years of history comes alive. Built around 1200 by Count Hugo I of Montfort, the founder of Feldkirch, the castle served as the political and cultural heart of the region for centuries. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of heritage, strength, and architectural beauty.

At the end of the Thirty Years’ War In 1647, Swedish troops occupied Feldkirch and Schattenburg Castle without a fight. They planned to demolish the castle pillage the town but they got a handsome ransom and decided not to. Naturally, the town pledged to maintain Schattenburg Castle for the Swedish crown.

Later on, from Habsburg rule to sieges and wartime survival, Schattenburg has withstood centuries of change. It was once a prison, barracks, and even earmarked for Nazi fortification. Yet it endures today as a testament to Austria’s rich and complex history.

Inside the castle’s walls, you’ll find one of Austria’s most important collections of historical arms and armour. Wander through rooms that echo the stories of knights, nobility, and wartime intrigue. Marvel at the preserved interiors and discover the origin of the castle’s name, “Schatten”, meaning “protection,” a fitting tribute to its enduring legacy as a fortress. The highlights of your visit will also include authentic medieval architecture with original wings from the 15th century and 16th-century frescoes in the castle chapel.

There is a charming inner courtyard restaurant offering regional specialties and a small museum shop with books, souvenirs, and gifts at the ticket desk.

Given the historical structure resulting in very limited accessibilty, the castle is not really good for handicapped persons.
