Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Zentrum - The Mother of the Frankfurt Kitchen

Join us to visit the home of a design icon. Step inside the Vienna home of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, the trailblazing Austrian architect who revolutionized domestic life with the invention of the Frankfurt Kitchen in 1926 — the world’s first fitted kitchen. As one of Austria’s first female architects, her visionary design transformed modern living. Today, her former residence in Vienna’s 5th district invites you to explore her legacy in a museum dedicated to her remarkable life and impact.

Step into the life and legacy of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897-2000) — Austria’s first female architect to fully practice the profession, a visionary in social housing, a women’s rights advocate, and a courageous resistance fighter against National Socialism.

Best known as the mother of the fitted kitchen, she revolutionized domestic life in 1926 with the creation of the Frankfurt Kitchen — a compact, efficient, and beautifully designed space that became the blueprint for modern kitchens. Her innovative model was installed in over 10,000 apartments, redefining how people live and work in the home.

Now, you can visit the very place where she spent the last 30 years of her life: her carefully designed apartment in Vienna’s 5th district. This intimate museum offers a rare glimpse into the mind and world of a true modernist. Designed by Schütte-Lihotzky herself starting in 1967, the 55-square-meter apartment seamlessly connects living, dining, working, and sleeping areas. Her original plans guided the recent restoration, from the yellow vestibule paint to the Turkish lantern ceiling lights. The original furnishings —including cane chairs, lamps, and her bathroom tiling—have been lovingly preserved. The terrace provides a landscaped outdoor retreat, while details like the restored Kyzgyz tapestry and handmade furniture bring the space to life.

The apartment is not fully accessible and can only be visited with assistance. There are no restroom facilities, café, or gift shop on-site. A brochure is available in the living room to guide your visit.
