Many of us think that after Freud and his psychotherapy the world was ready - and we couldn’t be more wrong. There is so much more and here we are going to get acquainted with the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy. This is a place to come and think about yourself even if you do not (feel that you) need therapy!
Its father, the neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl lived at Mariannengasse 1 until his death in 1997. There he completed his theses about humans as spiritually gifted beings who are able to defy all adversities as soon as and as long as they last it finds meaning in life. Frankl's creative site is now an inspiring museum in which visitors are introduced step by step to the fine art of mental health, learning more about their own opportunities and potential than just the career of a genius.
The museum is truly interactive explaining logotherapy and existential analysis. It is an initiative of the the Frankel Center, an education centre where both experts and interested laypeople get familiar with an image of humanity and methods of a healing approach as opposed to the first school of psychotherapy is psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud in the 1890s and thesecond Viennese school of psychotherapy referred to as Individual Psychology that was developed in the early 20th century.
Since 2022, the “Humanity as a unit” display completes the museum. The simple design of the large display invites you to engage intensively with “monanthropism”: Take a seat next to Viktor Frankl and recognise who you are and what characterises you as a “human being”. Dare to open “drawers with meaning” and change your reflection and your view of the world. You will see how much you can change and create with small gestures!
Mind you, there seems to be quite a bit of controversy as regards Frankl's being a true Auschwitz survivor and the origin of his logotherapy concept, not to mention his Nazi contacts - all the more a reason to check the museum with us!
What's more, fans of psychoanalysis will also find the Sigmund Freud Museum not far - make this a day of psychoanalysis for yourself!
Unfortunately, the museum is not accessible in a wheelchair or with a pram and there is no café - even in the immediate vicinity of the museum. There is a small shop behind the reception desk - check some interesting reading for yourself!
